To the Sea
To the Sea collection was a series created for The Hatch exhibition as part of
Raglan Arts weekend RAW '24.
To the Sea reflects my deep connection to Whāingaroa Harbour, inspired by the tidal rhythms, estuary flows, and dynamic interplay of water, land, and sky. This collection captures the movement of the harbour as it breathes—ebbing and flowing with the tides, carving channels, and reshaping the landscape.
The headlands that cradle the harbour play a significant role in these works, providing a sense of scale, structure, and contrast to the fluidity of the water. Their rugged forms anchor the compositions, serving as steadfast witnesses to the shifting tides and vibrant interplay of light and color.
Through abstract compositions, I explore the relationship between positive and negative space, evoking the fluidity and energy of water in motion while honoring the solid, grounding presence of the headlands. Bold, gestural brushstrokes combine with layered textures and vibrant acrylics to mirror the harbor’s ever-changing palette—contrasting stillness with motion, depth with surface, and water with land. Each piece aims to convey the essence of Whāingaroa’s tidal life, its vibrancy, and its harmony.













Native Blooms
Native Bloom collection was a small series created for The Hatch exhibition as part of Raglan Arts weekend RAW '23.
"I find the whole process of completing a painting very meditative, from foraging for florals and foliage, arranging them to form a composition, experimenting with colour, light, and texture, and slowly layering brushstrokes until I think a piece is done. I frequently drawback on my design skills by stitching together photos, sketches, and memories to design an arrangement."

Papatuanuku grows for us, taonga (gifts) of beauty and abundance. For millennia peoples of the world have created functional and often beautiful, forms from clay to ceramics.
As the cultures shift and bump against each other, new forms are developed and made.
Sometimes when this happens the sacred is used in an inappropriate medium - misunderstandings/offence occur. With the right heart, these can be acknowledged, owned, and righted. Just as cultures adopt and use other gifts from Papatuanuku - plants for food and beauty.
This painting includes three Crown Lynn pieces. The 'Kokowai Bowl', is decorated with manaia figures below a border of Rauponga pattern and raised on three Koruru mask feet in a rich green glaze. The bowl in the foreground of this painting is inspired by decorative elements from the Rauponga and Manaia ashtray with an upper border of Rauponga and underneath a band of Manaia and spiral design. The coffee pot is in a honey glaze, which thins out on the raised parts of the pattern creating interesting highlights to paint.
Native New Zealand flora includes Koromiko flower (Hebe), Raupka (Easter Orchid) flower, Manuka flower, and foliage of the silvery foliage of the Chatham Island Kakaha (Astelia Chathami), Kiokio (Blechnum Novae-Zelandiae and Makawe Taoairu (Maidenhair fern).
24 inches x 24 inches and painted in golden acrylic onto a stretched cotton canvas triple primed with quality acrylic gesso and finished with a matt varnish.
